UK spinout investor Northern Gritstone opens San Francisco office

Northern Gritstone, a UK investor backing northern university spinouts, is opening a San Francisco office to tap US capital and business networks.

Northern Gritstone, a UK investor in university spinouts from northern England, is opening a San Francisco office to attract US capital and business networks. The firm, which has raised £382 million, aims to help its portfolio companies scale internationally. It plans to spend about $1 million on the expansion and is hiring a venture partner.

Northern Gritstone, the investment vehicle focused on spinouts from northern English universities, is opening its first international office in San Francisco. The move aims to connect its portfolio companies with US capital, talent, and business development opportunities.

A transatlantic push

Since its launch in 2021, Northern Gritstone has raised £382 million and expanded its remit to include the University of Liverpool. The investor's portfolio includes companies emerging from research at the universities of Leeds, Manchester, and Sheffield.

The new office will be staffed by a venture partner who will focus on giving portfolio companies access to a US network of investors and customers. Northern Gritstone has no plans to invest in US-based companies. The firm is budgeting approximately $1 million for the expansion and hiring.

Ambitions beyond the UK

CEO Duncan Johnson told The Times that the goal is to accelerate international expansion. "Our portfolio companies are rooted in the North, but our ambitions are global when it comes to scaling them," he said. "Access to deeper pools of US capital, talent, and networks will let us turbocharge the international expansion of world-class research."

Johnson highlighted that US capital enables faster growth because the U.S. has a stronger procurement ecosystem and higher risk appetite for technology investments. "It allows us to recruit more talent into our businesses," he said.

A valuation discount

UK companies often trade at a discount in the U.S., but Johnson sees this as an opportunity for investors. "Capital is good at finding opportunities," he noted. "But you've got to make the effort to go and make it easy for them."

The expansion marks a significant step for a regional investor that has focused on the north of England. By establishing a presence in Silicon Valley, Northern Gritstone is signaling its intent to compete on a global stage for talent and capital.

The spinout ecosystem

Northern Gritstone is part of a growing ecosystem of investors targeting university spinouts, a sector that has generated some of the most innovative companies in recent years. The firm's success in raising £382 million demonstrates the appetite for deep-tech investments from UK academic institutions.

The opening of the San Francisco office is a pragmatic move to support portfolio companies as they scale. With U.S. investors increasingly interested in European tech, the timing aligns with broader transatlantic investment trends.

Northern Gritstone's office opening is a bet on the global potential of its portfolio. By bridging northern English innovation with Silicon Valley capital and networks, the firm aims to create a pipeline that benefits both its companies and its investors.
