Fans of ABC's High Potential will have to wait longer than expected for Morgan Gillory's return. The network has moved the hit crime drama from its traditional fall premiere slot to the midseason schedule, pushing Season 3 into early 2027 rather than September 2026.
The decision, announced as part of ABC's 2026-2027 programming slate, was made to allow the series to run uninterrupted without the breaks and preemptions that often fragment fall schedules. For a show that has built its audience through consistent weekly storytelling, the move is arguably a vote of confidence rather than a demotion.
That confidence is backed by impressive numbers. High Potential was the number one show of the 2025 fall season, the first 10 p.m. series to achieve that distinction in decades. Its second season averaged 12.98 million total viewers after seven days across ABC, Hulu, and digital platforms, with a 2.17 rating among adults 18-49. On linear television alone, it drew 9.07 million viewers, a series high and the best linear performance for an ABC scripted show since Grey's Anatomy in November 2020.
The renewal itself was never in doubt. ABC confirmed Season 3 in March via a social media post featuring the cast. "The case isn't closed," the announcement read. "Who's excited?"
The delay does come with behind-the-scenes changes. Original showrunner Todd Harthan has exited, with Nora and Lilla Zuckerman stepping in to steer the series forward. The cast, led by Kaitlin Olson as the brilliant but unorthodox crime consultant Morgan Gillory, is expected to remain intact. Daniel Sunjata will return as Detective Adam Karadec, with Judy Reyes, Javicia Leslie, Deniz Akdeniz, and Amirah J. also set to reprise their roles.
For viewers, the wait will stretch nearly a full year after Season 2's finale. But ABC's reasoning is sound: a midseason launch in early 2027 gives High Potential a cleaner run and less competition from the crowded fall premiere glut. In an era when networks are increasingly willing to shuffle their strongest shows for strategic advantage, the move reads as an attempt to protect an asset rather than bury it.
Whether the audience returns in the same numbers after a prolonged absence remains to be seen. But if Morgan Gillory has proven anything across two seasons, it is that she has a habit of solving problems other people cannot see coming.
