Y Combinator has announced the promotion of Diana Hu to Managing Partner. Hu, who first came through YC as a founder of Escher Reality, has become one of the most prolific partners in the accelerator's history since returning full-time in 2022.
Hu's journey is a testament to the YC ethos. She co-founded Escher Reality (S17), an augmented reality backend that was acquired by Niantic in 2018. After the acquisition, she ran the AR Platform team at Niantic, shipping AR features to the 100 million-plus players of Pokémon GO. She returned to Y Combinator in 2021 as a Visiting Group Partner and joined full-time the following year.
Over the past four years, Hu has worked with nearly 230 companies across 18 batches, logged over 2,100 office hours, and her portfolio companies are now worth a combined $7 billion. Her technical background is deeply rooted in the frontier of tech, with a degree in computer vision and machine learning from Carnegie Mellon and experience in data science and ML research.
A Powerful Combination of Skills
In a statement, YC President and CEO Garry Tan highlighted the unique combination of skills Hu brings to the role. "Few people have both built a startup from zero and shipped tech at that scale. Diana has done both. That combination, paired with deep technical experience in ML and AR, is exactly what today's founders need from a partner."
Hu has been at the center of working with builders pushing the frontier on AI, robotics, and hard tech, including breakouts like Avoca, Reducto, David AI, Salient, Stepful, and HappyRobot. Her promotion signals Y Combinator's continued commitment to supporting deeply technical founders in the most cutting-edge areas of technology. Hu grew up in Chile before pursuing her studies in the United States.
