AMD Commits Up to $5 Billion in Anthropic AI Infrastructure Partnership

AMD will invest up to $5 billion in Anthropic as part of a strategic partnership that includes deploying up to 2 gigawatts of AMD Instinct MI450 GPUs in Helios rackscale systems.

AMD and Anthropic announced a strategic partnership on July 22, 2026, under which AMD will invest up to $5 billion in Anthropic in exchange for Anthropic's commitment to purchase tens of billions of dollars in AMD AI server chips. Anthropic will deploy up to 2 gigawatts of AMD Instinct MI450 GPUs in Helios rackscale systems, with the first gigawatt coming online in H1 2027. The deal also includes a multi-year engineering collaboration where Claude will optimize AMD's ROCm software and AMD will adopt Claude across its teams.

The Partnership

AMD and AI company Anthropic announced a strategic partnership on July 22, 2026. As part of the deal, AMD intends to invest up to $5 billion in Anthropic, contingent on meeting certain milestones. In return, Anthropic has committed to purchasing AI server chips worth tens of billions of dollars from AMD over the term of the agreement.

Massive Compute Deployment

Anthropic will deploy up to 2 gigawatts of AMD Instinct MI450 GPUs using AMD's new Helios rackscale system. The systems will run AMD Instinct MI455X GPUs combined with AMD EPYC "Venice" CPUs, AMD Pensando networking, and the ROCm software stack. One gigawatt of compute capacity roughly corresponds to the power output of a single nuclear reactor. The first gigawatt is scheduled to come online in the first half of 2027.

The deal builds on Anthropic's existing use of AMD Instinct MI355X GPUs and joins recent data center agreements Anthropic has reached with SpaceX and TeraWulf. Anthropic has also signed AI infrastructure deals with Google, Broadcom, and Amazon.

Engineering Collaboration

Alongside the hardware deal, the two companies are launching a multi-year technical collaboration. Anthropic's Claude AI model will help optimize workloads for AMD Instinct GPUs and accelerate development of the ROCm software stack. Conversely, AMD plans to adopt Claude broadly across its engineering and product-development teams.

Voices on the Deal

AMD chair and CEO Lisa Su described the collaboration as bringing together Anthropic's AI expertise and AMD's high-performance computing, and spoke of establishing Helios as a central platform for the next generation of AI infrastructure.

Tom Brown, co-founder and chief compute officer at Anthropic, stressed the importance of access to compute: "It is central to keeping Claude at the frontier and meeting customer demand, and partnering across the stack secures the necessary capacity." Anthropic deliberately pursues a diversification strategy to match workloads with the best-suited hardware.
