Alpha Dog Games is back in independent hands. The studio, which was one of four Bethesda studios closed by Xbox in 2024, has been reacquired by its founders, Shawn Woods and Jeff Cameron. The news was confirmed in a statement shared with GamesIndustry.biz, marking a rare instance of a studio returning from a corporate closure.
"We're grateful to Microsoft for working with us through the transition and enabling Alpha Dog Games to return to independent ownership," said Woods. "We're incredibly excited to have the name we put so much effort and pride into building back in our hands."
Based in Nova Scotia, Alpha Dog Games was founded in 2012. It gained recognition for developing Mighty Doom, a mobile top-down shooter, and had been a part of the Bethesda family before Microsoft's acquisition. The studio was closed alongside Arkane Austin, Tango Gameworks, and Roundhouse Studios in a sweeping cost-cutting measure. The move was a blow to the development community, but the founders' return signals a new beginning.
A Focus on the Future
While specific details about future projects remain under wraps, Woods noted that the studio has been "exploring opportunities with partners, publishers, licensors, and others." The excitement surrounding the studio's re-emergence has exceeded their expectations. "It has been humbling to see how much our games still mean to players around the world," Woods added. "The passion from the community has reminded us just how special these experiences were, and we couldn't be more excited about what the future may hold."
