Fresh desktops for the last full month of summer
Whether you are on holiday or deep into a new project, a new desktop background is one of the easiest ways to reset the feel of a workspace. Smashing Magazine has published its August 2026 collection, continuing a tradition that has run for more than fifteen years.
Artists and designers from around the world contributed original pieces. Every wallpaper is available in a range of screen resolutions and can be downloaded at no cost. The themes were left entirely to the creators; the editors did not prescribe subjects.
A sample of the month’s ideas
One design marks World Rock Paper Scissors Day with a geometric meditation on the classic three-way balance of stone, parchment and blade. Another leans into August stargazing, with clear nights and meteor activity as the visual hook. A third celebrates Happiness Happens Day on 8 August with a light, holiday mood.
There are bees and late-summer sweetness, a retro van parked under moonlight, coral reefs in Bora Bora, campfire nights that feel both hot and cold at once, chamomile fields that smell like Ukrainian summer, and a quiet reminder to keep mint on the windowsill so the flies stay outside. Space themes, Bigfoot conference camping, Chicago heat, East Asian Liqiu daylilies, and Estonian summer nights all appear in the set.
Each piece is credited to its designer and comes with a short statement of intent. The collection is deliberately varied so there is something for almost every taste.
How to join the next round
Smashing Magazine will publish the September edition on 31 August. Artists who want to be included are invited to submit work; the editors say they look forward to seeing what arrives. The same open, non-prescriptive approach applies: bring your own theme and emotion.
The wallpapers remain free, multi-resolution, and ready to drop onto desktops and home screens. Fifteen-plus years on, the monthly series is still one of the simplest and most cheerful design rituals on the web.
