Big Tech had already normalized charging exorbitant prices for modest storage bumps. While native onboard storage offers speed and reliability benefits, expandable storage remains far more viable and affordable for users who need to store large amounts of static data, such as media archives or offline downloads [[13]].

Furthermore, our storage requirements are booming. Both Android and iOS now locally store AI models to enable offline functionality, which eats away at available space. A 128GB phone that felt generous a few years ago is now inadequate.

Why Flagships Must Adapt

The idea is not to be forced into a single storage upgrade path but to have multiple options. It makes zero sense to be locked into the storage capacity you opted for at purchase, with no way to upgrade as your needs grow. High-end phones from brands like Samsung and Motorola have supported storage expansion in the past, proving it is possible to integrate a card slot without compromising device quality.

As our needs evolve to include 4K video, local AI models, and massive app downloads, asking for more storage should not cost an arm and a leg. Expandable storage on mainstream phones is needed more than ever before.
