Denim is one of the most water-intensive industries on the planet. Traditional denim manufacturing uses thousands of litres of water per pair of jeans, not to mention the chemicals and energy required. Indigotex, an IIT Delhi spin-off, has developed a solution that flips the script entirely[reference:125].
The company has created INDIWOOL Denim, the world's first indigo-dyed wool denim[reference:126]. It is a first-of-its-kind innovation that applies traditional indigo shades to wool using a patented dyeing technology[reference:127]. How it works
Indigotex's ECOTEX processing technology eliminates the use of water and chemicals in denim manufacturing[reference:129]. According to the company, this enables complete water and chemical savings and reduces energy consumption by up to 85%[reference:130]. The fabric is machine washable and shrink-proof[reference:131].
The wool denim can be manufactured with wool content ranging from 60% to 100%[reference:132]. It is lightweight, breathable, and suitable for a wide temperature range from 3°C to 33°C[reference:133]. The fabric is also biodegradable and can be blended with natural fibres like cotton, lyocell, and hemp[reference:134].
Recognition and backing
Indigotex has received backing from SIDBI and FITT-IIT Delhi to scale its sustainable denim innovation[reference:135]. The company was also a runner-up in the ReNew ACE climate entrepreneurship program[reference:136].
The wool used in INDIWOOL Denim is sourced from locally reared sheep in Kullu and Dharamshala[reference:137]. Plasma technology is used to enhance durability and texture while significantly reducing water usage[reference:138].
