A World Cup match doesn't just draw eyes to a screen, it visibly bends a country's Internet traffic. Because Cloudflare runs a network spanning more than 330 points of presence worldwide, the company's Radar team could track exactly how the 2026 tournament reshaped online behavior across June and July, using the median traffic of the four preceding weeks as a stable baseline and measuring deviations from it on a logarithmic scale where zero means normal, positive means a spike, and negative means a drop.

Kickoff Time Decides Everything

The single biggest driver of traffic change wasn't which teams played, it was what time the match kicked off locally. Matches played between midnight and 8am local time produced the largest swings, in some cases more than doubling traffic as fans stayed up or woke early to watch. Matches during normal daytime hours barely moved the needle, since the people watching were likely already online.

Bosnia and Herzegovina made the pattern obvious within a single country: a 2am kickoff sent traffic well above normal, while an evening kickoff for the same team saw traffic fall to roughly 70% of its typical level as viewers set their devices aside to focus on the game.

The Brazil versus Japan Round of 32 match, which Brazil won 2-1 on June 29, offered an even cleaner comparison. The same 90 minutes landed during normal waking hours in Rio de Janeiro but the dead of night in Tokyo. Looking at teams overall, Argentina topped the list with a 1.17x impact score, meaning the typical country's traffic swung roughly 17% away from normal whenever Argentina played, likely amplified by the team's status as defending champions and the possibility that any knockout match could be Lionel Messi's last with the national side. France, Brazil, Portugal, Morocco, Spain, and Norway, the last driven by Erling Haaland's popularity, followed close behind.

Halftime, Not Hydration Breaks, Is When People Log Off

Grouping countries by the shape of their match-day traffic curves revealed three distinct behaviors. The largest cluster, 44 countries across 101 matches, showed traffic rising during halftime and hydration breaks as viewers reached for their phones. A smaller group of 8 countries, including Algeria, Tunisia, Jordan, Egypt, and DR Congo, showed the opposite: traffic actually dropped during those same pauses.

Breaking down that second cluster by content type pointed to an explanation. In Algeria's matches, the bulk of the traffic increase came from multimedia and streaming requests, suggesting that a disproportionate share of fans there were watching via stream rather than television. A short hydration break wasn't enough to make someone close a live stream and step away, but the longer halftime interval was, which explains why traffic dipped specifically then and not during the brief three-minute pauses mid-half.

Even the Final Left a Mark

At Cloudflare's global scale, individual events rarely register in the aggregate numbers, but the World Cup final was an exception. Argentina and Spain's combined traffic volume rose by up to 20 percentage points during the final compared with a similar baseline period, and the England versus France bronze medal match produced a smaller but still visible bump. Zooming into the traffic graph for the final, kickoff, halftime, hydration breaks, and the final whistle are all identifiable as distinct inflection points.

The World Cup remains one of the few events left that genuinely synchronizes attention across dozens of countries and time zones at once, and for a month, that synchronization was visible in the plumbing of the Internet itself.
